After holding Redskins fans <strike>hostage</strike> in suspense for over a month, Dan Snyder’s private plane made one last trip and finally delivered a new head coach: Jim Zorn.

Oh, well obviously Jim Zorn would get the job, I mean heck he was at the top of everyone’s short list, right? Or to put it another way, “Whattheheyhowho!?”

To his credit, the former Seahawks quarterbacks coach survived perhaps the most rigorous interviewing process ever seen in the National Football League — or maybe any sports league — so he must have something going on. Snyder spoke to like 1,000 different candidates in a casting call that rivaled American Idol in its size and scope.

But is Zorn the marquee name to continue the legacy of Joe Gibbs? What about Jim Fassel or Steve Mariucci, guys with a track record we could tear apart and analyze, poke holes in and ridicule. Zorn? It doesn’t seem like the sort of thing Snyder would do. It seems too . . . reasonable is the word I’m looking for.

This is a disturbing development. What fun is it going to be if Dan Snyder starts running the Redskins like a professional football franchise instead of a real-life fantasy team? Hopefully he trades all his first-day draft picks to the Cardinals for Matt Leinart.

The Seattle Seahawks plan to announce today their succession plan for when coach Mike Holmgren leave after the 2008 season, and those plans involve former Atlanta Falcons coach Jim Mora.

Mora, if you’ll remember, coached the Falcons for four seasons, taking the team to the NFC Championship game against Philadelphia in 2004. It was all downhill from there, though, and in 2007 he famously said in a radio interview he’d take the head coaching position at the University of Washington. Falcons owner Arthur Blank didn’t care too much for that and fired Mora at the end of the season. (This would of course set the stage for Blank to be betrayed again by Bobby Petrino.)

Well, at least Mora landed close to his dream job.

I know, it’s pretty unlikely even if you live in Dallas, but let’s say you are. And you’ve been waiting for like forever for your team to show some sign of competitiveness — 1999 the Rangers have had just one winning season. So is it good news that Tom Hicks has hired Nolan Ryan as club president?

Ryan is one of the all-time great pitchers to be sure, but he doesn’t have much of a track record as a baseball administrator so I’m not very confident he’ll be able to turn this thing around. It would be great, though, to see him go a couple rounds out on the field once again.

If they ever build a Hall of Fame for journeymen NFL quarterbacks, Brad Johnson should be the very first inductee. The guy has logged more miles around the league in 15 seasons than Lance Armstrong tooling around France on his bike all those years. Well, that legacy opens a new chapter today because Johnson has signed with the Dallas Cowboys.

I guess Drew Bledsoe wasn’t old and slow enough for Jerry Jones’ taste. Word on the street is that Tony Romo was lobbying for the team to sign Trent Dilfer, but told a reporter that Johnson would do just fine.

Actually, it’s probably a pretty smart move by the Cowboys and big relief to Romo. If they had signed someone like Jeff Garcia, now that guy has been known to replace starting QBs, and after the way last season ended for the ‘Boys, more than a few fans might be thinking it’s time for Romo’s brief time in the sun to end. But with Johnson as the #2 on the depth chart, no one is going to be calling for a change under center, at least not until the first time Romo bobbles the snap on a game-winning field goal attempt.

When it was explained to dead pool participants that Michael “Coach Killer” Vick didn’t, in fact, actually kill his coaches and instead only greatly increased their odds of being fired through no real fault of their own, Fidel rocketed right back up to the top of the charts, with a bullet.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced yesterday that head coach Bill Cowher was resigning after 15 seasons at the helm.

According to Cowher: “I’m not burned out. There comes a time in your life — I’m healthy and happy, and I’ve been fortunate — you’ve got to prioritize things. My family has made a lot of sacrifices for me, and I’m looking forward to being there for them. It’s the right time.”

The Steelers immediately announced his replacement, which will be Cowher’s Jaw. Team president Art Rooney II welcomed Cowher’s Jaw to the team and said that players and management both were confident that a little “jutting and menacing” were all the team needed to get over the hump and return to their winning ways.

Cowher’s Jaw’s comments to the press were brief, consising solely of: “Grrrrrr!!!! Mmmmrraaawwrrr!!!! Grrrrrr!!!!”

Since every able-bodied white male seem to be currently gainfully employed, the Raiders finally gave up on Saturday and announced that they were hiring Art Shell for his second stint as head coach.

Art seems a nice enough guy, but he hasn’t been a head coach since, umm, the Raiders canned him back in 1994. He also wasn’t exactly their first choice, only being tossed the bone after Al Saunders, Rod Marinelli, Mike Martz, and Louisville coach Bobby Petrino all told the Raiders “thanks, but no thanks” when offered the gig.

So, umm, yeah. Congrats, Art. This situation has “big win” written all over it. Kudos.

The Buffalo Bills have hired Dick Jauron as their newest head coach, replacing Mike Mularkey who resigned ten days ago. Jauron reportedly wowed owner Ralph Wilson and new general manager Marv Levy with his impressive resume, ie he’s from an Ivy League school. Either that or the Bills are in such bad shape that the 35-46 record Jauron compiled while head coach of the Chicago Bears seems successful by comparrison (which it very well might). But even though Jauron is a sharp dresser who I’m sure inspires confidence in the men around him, it sounds like some people are not very happy with the new hire. Where’s your Bulldog spirit, Bills fans?
