(Yes Virginia, there are other sports events going on out there.) America’s top skier when he wants to be Bode Miller won his third consecutive super-combine event to take the World Cup.

Miller beat Ivica Kostelic by 1.37 seconds in two runs in Val d’Isère, France, the final super-combined event of the season. Natko Zrncic-Dim came in third in the event.

So you see, this is how it works in sports: Train hard and compete to the best of your ability, then you can party your ass off after you’ve won. Maybe Bode can keep that in mind when the Vancouver games come around in 2010.

Skiier Bode Miller, America’s favorite whipping boy of the 2006 Olympics in Torino, is having a fantastic season. He just won his fifth World Cup event by taking first in the Chamonix super-combined this weekend and now has a strong hold on the season title race with 310 points.

What is it with Bode that he competes like a champion in non-Olympic years, but shine the spotlight of the Winter Games on him and he falls to pieces?

He’ll likely come into the 2010 Vancouver games a heavy favorite for gold medals but then develop that bad playboy attitude once again, spending his days doing interviews about how he’s there competing for himself and not his country while spending his nights out on the town.

For now, though, he’s on top of the world so fans had better enjoy it while it lasts.

Not the best of weekends for the US team. Michelle Kwan is out, Bode Miller and Daron Rahlves came up empty in the men’s downhill, and Apolo Anton Ohno saw his chances slip slide away in 1,500 meter short track semi-final.

Not really sure why Soul-Patchy was trying to make the unneccesary pass at the end that spelled his downfall, when he was in position to qualify for the finals, but there’s probably a reason he’s a world-famous Olympian and I had the sirloin special at Boston Market for dinner last night.

Grandma Luge is also out of the games, after injuring her wrist in a practice run. It looks like US downhiller Lindsey Kildow may be finished, too, after being taken off the mountain on a stretcher after a bad spill during her training run.

As far as the all-hallowed medal count, Norway is leading with 7 total, followed by Russia (5), the US (3), Germany (3), Italy (3), and the Netherlands (3).

According to SI.com, world champion moguls skier Nate Roberts has got a little gamble in him:

“And so, Roberts, 22, sat down at the Treasure Island casino in Las Vegas with teammate Jaret “Speedy” Peterson, the reigning World Cup champion aerialist, and began to draw cards. Five hours and more than a few 21s later, the pair turned a few hundred dollars into $230,000 each. Roberts, who had been making somewhere in the neighborhood of $20,000 per year, suddenly had a windfall of training expenses paid for.”

Nice work, Nate. Hey, by the way, did you know that Nine.com offers online blackjack, for real money, that you can play from the comfort of your own home? They’ll even give you up to $1,000 in free cash, just for creating an account.
