Three cheers for Eli. Manning the Lesser finally got over the hump with his first post-season victory today, beating the Buccaneers on the road 24-14. Lil’ Eli played a good game throwing for two touchdowns and no interceptions, but let’s give credit also to his receivers who actually caught some passes, his running backs and offensive line and his defense that played lights out against Jeff Garcia and Bucs. (Somewhere I’m sure Carmella DeCesare is calling into a radio show to defend her man once again.)

Three cheers also to Norv Turner for doing what Marty Schottenheimer never could do: win a playoff game. The Chargers looked to be heading for yet another post-season defeat, trailing much of their game against the Tennessee Titans, but then Philip Rivers — who’s still a little bitch in my book — finally started to turn things on, finding Vincent Jackson for a 25-yard touchdown in the third quarter. LT rushed for only 42 yards, but his dive across the goal line in the final period put the game away for San Diego.

Who needs Dante Culpepper? Byron Leftwich completed 7 of 11 passes for 78 yards and a TD for the Jags, while David Garrard was 12 of 16 for 153 yards.
Maybe Culpeper wasn’t so bad. Trent Green, who completed just 6 of 15 for 60 yards with an interception, got booed off the field after his first appearance for the Dolphins.

<ins datetime="2007-08-12T15:12:05+00:00">Kansas City 12, Cleveland 16</ins>
Quick thinking. Benny Sapp scooped up an incomplete pass from Charlie Frye to Jerome Harrison that was ruled a lateral and took it 56 yards for the Chiefs’ only touchdown.
What’s he thinking? Brady Quinn was holding the clipboard all night after holding out on the Browns for 12 days trying to get his contract done. Of course, Larry Johnson wasn’t even in a Chiefs uniform as he’s still holding out.

<ins datetime="2007-08-12T15:12:05+00:00">Green Bay 13, Pittsburgh 9</ins>
Brett who? Backup QB Aaron Rogers completed 18 of 27 for 168 yards and a touchdown after Green Bay’s first team offense gained all of 12 yards on 12 plays.
Oh that Brett. Favre completed just two of seven passes for seven yards. No interceptions, though.

<ins datetime="2007-08-12T15:12:05+00:00">Carolina 24, New York Giants 21</ins>
Funny names are good. Wide receiver Taye Biddle caught two touchdown passes for the Panthers, a 23-yard catch from David Carr late in the first half, and an 85-yard catch and run that shredded the Giants’ secondary early in the third quarter.
Funny names aren’t so good. Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka got beat repeatedly by the Panthers’ rushing attack.

<ins datetime="2007-08-12T15:12:05+00:00">Chicago 20, Houston 19</ins>
Sexy. Rex Grossman *gasp* completed his first eight passes for the Bears to go 8 of 10 for 50 yards.
Not so sexy. New Texans QB Matt Schaub missed his chance to score a TD when he overthrew Kevin Walter in the end zone. He finished three of five for 25 yards against a Bears defense that was missing Brian Urlacher and Tommie Harris.

<ins datetime="2007-08-12T15:12:05+00:00">Washington 14, Tennessee 6</ins>
Heads up play. Rookie corner Byron Westbrook recovered a fumble in the end zone late in the game to give the Redskins the win.
Head somewhere else. QB Vince Young was benched by Titans head coach Jeff Fisher for violating a team rule.

<ins datetime="2007-08-12T15:12:05+00:00">Arizona 23, Oakland 27</ins>
A win is a win. After going 2-14 last year and loosing Art Shell as head coach, Raider Nation will take anything they can get.
A loss is nothing new. One of the Raiders’ wins last year was a 22-9 thrashing of the Cardinals.

We all know Vince Young has some of the best athletic skills in the National Football League. His breakout performance last season as a rookie put the rest of the league on notice that defenses were going to have to deal with whole new breed of player when they go up against the Tennessee Titans. But despite his being a multifaceted athlete with the ability to create plays with both his arm and his feet, Vince might do well to limit himself to playing football rather than, say, street fighting.

It seems that yesterday in practice Vince took a swing at safety Donnie Nickey and connected with a glancing blow to Nickey’s helmet — with his throwing hand. The second year QB apparently threw down after Nickey took two receivers to the ground, on one play by putting a choke hold on Courtney Roby. (Sounds like Vince might also have a future ahead if he decided to switch to playing hockey.)

Luckily for the Titans and Titans fans everywhere the scuffle was broken up quickly and Vince came out without serious injury. Just image, though, Vince could have become the first player in history to befall the Madden Curse due to a self-inflicted injury.

At first glance I thought it kind of strange that Vince Young was chosen to be on the cover of Madden NFL 2008. Normally the marketing gurus at EA Sports pick some established veteran with a proven track record to represent their flagship game, not a second-year player who is still developing. But then the more I thought about it the more sense it made: The company is either tired of taking heat for ruining the season/career of veteran players, or they just couldn’t find an NFL veteran willing to take the risk.

Yes, the 2007 Rookie of the Year is about to follow in the footsteps of Dante Culpepper (knee), Michael Vick (broken leg), Donovan McNabb (sports hernia/Terrell Owens), and Shaun Alexander (foot), which means he’ll surely be visited by some horrible injury or have an otherwise terrible season. But since he’s still so early in his career, Young should be able to bounce back from this experience and have plenty of years left to reach his potential.

Still, I hope you didn’t make any sizable bet at the end of last season on the Titans making the playoffs or Young setting any records as quarterback this year.
