Ah, the pageantry and traditions that go along with the Poinsettia Bowl, er sorry, the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. Yes, the great grand-nephew of all the college bowls, the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl dates all the way back to 2005 when the very first bowl of poinsettias was handed out to the Navy Mideshipmen for beating Colorado State. How exciting then that Navy returned to QUALCOMM Stadium this year to face the Utah Utes in a bid to reclaim their title as Poinsettia champions.

If the legendary Grantland Rice were to still grace us with his poetic flair, perhaps he would have described the game thusly:

The Midshipmen steamed into San Diego harbor like an invading armada, trading cannon volleys with mighty Utah through the first half for a 10-7 lead. But then the Utes slammed a torpedo into Navy’s broadside with three unanswered touchdowns, one on a 40-yard pass play from Brian Johnson to Derrick Richards.

Dead in the water and listing badly, the Midshipmen rallied the crew topside to repel the boarders in hand to hand combat, scoring on a nine-play charge and converting for two points on a run by quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada. But mighty Utah scuttled those plans when Darrell Mack rammed his way into the end zone for an insurmountable lead.

Or something like that. And best of all, we have like 40 more of these games left to be played before the meaningful bowls on New Years.

Happy holidays.
