Boston College won its eighth consecutive bowl game yesterday, besting Michigan State 24-21 in the Champ Sports Bowl. More importantly, though, Matt Ryan gave all the pro scouts something to look at throwing for 249 yards and three touchdowns. Now I don’t claim to be any draft board Svengali like a certain oil slicked hairdo wearing prognosticator on a cable sports channel, but I’m guessing Ryan could go early in next year’s NFL draft. Where will he wind up?

The new administration in Miami isn’t beholden to Cleo Lemon — or anyone else, for that matter — but I would guess Bill Parcells is looking more at a running back or maybe someone on defense to start his Dolphins rebuilding campaign. And with Marc Bulger and Gus Ferotte still on the roster, quarterback isn’t really a need for the St. Louis Rams. (What they lacked this season was a shaman or a healer to keep guys on the field.)

The Jets probably should be looking for a solution at quarterback, considering the oft injured Chad Pennington is close to being done and Kellen Clemens is a doubtful candidate for QB of the future. New York, though, never takes the player they should so I’m guessing they’ll pass on Ryan and draft an offensive lineman.

Oakland drafted their $31 million man last year and Kansas City says they’re sticking by Brodie Croyle (good luck with that), which is good news for the team that needs, needs, needs a quarterback: the Falcons.

Atlanta’s woes are many and deep, but whoever they find to coach the team (subliminal message: Mike Singletary) is going to need someone other than Joey Harrington or Chris Redman to start the reclamation effort. Ryan would be a good fit because he’s fairly mobile and can take a fair amount of punishment, and that offensive line isn’t getting better any time soon.

(Note to Arthur Blank: A personal check is fine. I figure you’re good for it.)

Have you had enough meaningless, minor bowl games yet? Oh brother, we’re just getting started. There’s three — count ‘em, three — bowl games tonight to distract you from whatever you would normally be doing this Friday evening.

First up is the Champ Sports Bowl. Now you may remember this one as the Tangerine Bowl or maybe the MicronPC Bowl, or perhaps the Carquest Bowl, the Blockbuster Bowl, or even the Sunshine Classic. However you remember this one, it is worth remembering that the Champ Sports Bowl match-ups have rarely been very memorable. I mean, who can forget when Georgia Tech beat Syracuse 51-14 back in 2004?

Anyhoo, #17 Boston College takes on Michigan State tonight in Orlando, which means one last look at one-time Heisman candidate Matt Ryan before he gets drafted by the Jets or the Falcons next spring. Let’s hope he doesn’t puke on national television this time.

Up next is the Texas Bowl, which hardly no one will see because it is broadcast on the NFL Network. Probably though no one will care because TCU is playing Houston and does anyone know anything about either of these teams?

Last on the schedule is the Emerald Bowl brought to you by those wacky folks at Emerald nuts. Oregon State earned its trip to San Francisco with a 6-3 mark in the Pac-10, including an impressive win over then #2 Cal and an injury-depleted Oregon squad. The Beavers will square-off against Maryland, owners of a 3-5 ACC record and a 6-6 overall mark.

Crazy how a team can finish under .500 in conference play yet still get chosen for a post-season game; maybe the Detroit Lions should consider switching to the FBS.

Out in Boston, Mass., they like their baseball teams to be championship in caliber, their beans to be baked, and their tea parties to be thrown by revolutionaries. As for their football, well, they really like the New England Patriots. But I’m sure they would root just as loudly for the Boston College Eagles if they were to make it to the BCS national championship game. Unfortunately that doesn’t appear very likely at this point.

The top 10 upset curse nabbed another victim this weekend as BC got upended at home 27-17 by the unranked Florida State Seminoles. Quarterback Matt Ryan, just a week removed from his heroic performance against Virginia Tech, threw three interceptions including a pick six to Geno Hayes.

But don’t despair Eagles fans because the Provincial Report is here to fill you in on all the highlight achievements by your most famous alum in the NFL.

Speaking of those undefeated Patriots, Dan Koppen did a fine job of hiking the ball to Tom Brady all day against the Colts. Cowboys tackle Marc Colombo, meanwhile, must have done his job well Sunday night because it looked like Tony Romo was upright most of the time against the Eagles.

Seattle’s Matt Hasselbeck had to put the Seahawks on his back and drag them kicking and screaming into overtime against the Browns; he threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns, but the ‘Hawks lost on Phil Dawson field goal.

His brother Tim Hasselbeck had an easier time riding the pine for the Cardinals in Tampa Bay, though it probably wasn’t much fun seeing your team lose to Jeff Garcia and the Bucs. Chris Hovan recorded two tackles for the Buccaneers.

Linebacker Vinny Ciurciu, who plays for the Minnesota Vikings — Hovan’s former team — also recorded two tackles in the Vikes big win over the Chargers. Another former BC linebacker, Ricky Brown, suited up for the Raiders but had no stats in their loss to Houston.

And finally, it was obvious that the Steelers were trying to run up the score on the Ravens on Monday Night Football because backup emergency quarterback Brian St. Pierre didn’t get any playing time. Such a shame.

Surprise, surprise. The #2 college football team in the country played a game against a lower-ranked opponent … and they didn’t lose!

True enough, Boston College tried hard to lose to Virginia Tech. The Eagles offense looked spectacularly craptastic against the Hokies defense in the Blacksburg rain, and the defense allowed 10 points. But in the final four minutes quarterback Matt Ryan put BC on his shoulders and drove the team 92 yards for a touchdown, then after recovering an onside kick it was Ryan completed five more passes, including a 24-yard toss to Andre Callender for the game-winning touchdown.

So is that it? If the #2 team can win on the road does that mean the curse of the top 10 is over? Or does this increase the chances that #1 Ohio State will get toppled by #25 Penn State on Saturday night?

One thing is for sure: Matt Ryan just increased his chances of getting of getting drafted by the Dolphins next spring.
