Putting the “Spectator” in Spectator Sports
Where Was The Rioting In Philly?
When your major sports teams have come up empty for more than twenty years, can you hang your hat on a lacrosse championship? It’s a tough call that Philadelphians have to make now that the Philadelphia Barrage won their second Major League Lacrosse title in three years. The team has only been in existence since 2001 and played in Bridgeport, Conn., until 2004, and it already has more titles than the Phillies and has tied the Flyers. The last Philadelphia team to win a championship was the 76ers back in 1983, while the Eagles won their last NFL title in 1960. One might think that Philly sports fans are so desperate to celebrate a championship, any championship, they’d be out in the streets rioting right now, but we haven’t seen much evidence of any cars being set ablaze since the Barrage’s 23-12 victory over the Denver Outlaws, which probably bodes well for Philadelphia.
