Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis has bid adieu to the bristling goatee that threatened to ensnare the entire Colorado Rockies team in its gnarly clutches during the World Series.

“Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis shaved off his famed goatee at the Cask ‘n Flagon yesterday, collecting $5,000 from Gillette for his Hits for Kids charity. But the close shave was no quick shave. With the lights from more than a dozen TV cameras shined on and a throng of media and fans cheered, the Golden Glove-winning good guy first had his facial hair trimmed. For a few moments yesterday afternoon, the slugger was sporting only a moustache before he showed off his clean-shaven face.”

While we’d much rather see brave souls growing facial hair for cold, hard cash, I guess raising money for the children is a noble enough endeavo. Bravo, Kevin Youkilis, bravo.

The problem with playing at high altitude is the thin air helps everyone, not just the home team, hit the long ball. Boston scored six in the third inning then another three in the eighth, including an RBI double from Jacoby Ellsbury. The rookie finished with four hits and two runs batted in.

I don’t often find myself in agreement with Tim McCarver, but the FOX color man hit the nail right on the head tonight with the quote above after his network hijacked coverage of Game 2 in the World Series to bring you an extended commercial message from Taco Bell.

It was bad enough when after Jacoby Ellsbury stole second base in the fourth that Joe Buck had to interrupt the game to let everyone know that Taco Bell would be giving away a free taco to everyone in America, but then the following inning FOX cut away from the action to run a tape — which looked obviously staged — of another BoSox player telling Ellsbury about the promotion.

BUT THEN they cut away AGAIN to Ken Rosenthal in the stands with the Taco Bell COO — who just so happened to be at the game — so he could do a little pitch for the fast food chain.

Sweet Jebus, it makes you think the whole game was rigged just so Taco Bell could do its little commercial promo.

“Hi, I’m Manny Ramirez,” the listing reads. “I bought this AMAZING grill for about $4,000 and I used it once. … But I never have the time to use it because I am always on the road. I would love to sell it and you will get an autographed ball signed by me.

“Enjoy it, Manny Ramirez.”

You’ve got until March 28th to get your bid in, so, you know, don’t delay.
