Former Michigan State wide receiver Charles Rogers, perhaps the posterboy for Matt Millen’s ineptitude at identifying talent in the draft, is headed to Canada to play football. And according to a stoner friend of mine, that’s pretty cool.

If you’ll remember, Rodgers was the second player selected in the 2003 Draft by the Lions. He’s been out with injuries, got benched for having a bad attitude, never really performed at the level he was expected to, and finally got suspended by the league for substance abuse violations, which he admitted later was due to testing positive for marijuana.

So that’s why I called my stoner friend. He’s traveled quite a bit, to Amsterdam, Jamaica, Australia, mostly to see bands and smoke weed. He says Canadians are pretty cool about getting high, so Rogers should feel pretty comfortable up there.

My friend did tell me to tell Rogers not to take his own weed across the border, because A) he might get busted by the border patrol and they are “definitely not cool, man,” and B) because you can get “killer bud up there.” By the way, my stoner buddy was high when I talked to him, so he actually thought I knew Rogers. He gave me the number of a girl in Vancouver and said, “That dude should look her up if he needs a place to crash. She’s totally cool.”

Big news today from our neighbors to the north: Dominique Dorsey tied a Canadian Football League record last night when he returned a missed field goal 129 yards for a touchdown. Yeah, pretty good eh? Unfortunately his Toronto Argonauts lost the game 29-27 in overtime to the Montreal Alouettes.

Now you might be thinking to yourself, how can you return a kick 129 yards for a touchdown? But then you remember that this is Canadian football we’re talking about, where the field is 110 yards from goal line to goal line and the end zones are 20 yards deep. Oh those nutty Canucks.

You might remember a couple years ago Nate Vasher of the Bears set a record in the National Football League (aka the real football league) when he returned a missed FG 108 yards for a score. To refresh your memory, here’s some video:

Tomorrow us Yanks will all be stuck watching such natty NFL fare as San Francisco at Detroit and Arizona vs. Dallas, but up in Canada they’ll all be watching the Division Finals of the CFL. That’s right, the Grey Cup championship is just a week away, and an entire nation will be rivited to see who emerges from this weekend’s semi-final matches to contend for the title. To get you up to speed, here’s a preview of the East and West Division match-ups.

Toronto Argonauts at Montreal Alouettes - This marks the fifth consecutive year the Argos and Als will meet to decide the East Division championship. Apparently the CFL has not heard of <del datetime="2006-11-11T14:14:01+00:00">mediocrity</del> parity and how great it has been for the NFL. Of course, this is the game American football fans should be most interested in because Ricky Williams plays for the Boatmen, though if he helps Toronto win their first Grey Cup since 2004, he might just well trade in his American citizenship and stay in Canada. Not all former NFLers have such good feelings about being Canada, though. Alain Kashama, defensive end, and cornerback Mark Estelle, were pulled over for a traffic violation this past Monday night after Montreal police suspected a drug deal might be going down; the players say the police are racists. Bringing the Cup back to Ville de Montréal for the first time since 2002 might solve that.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at B.C. Lions - This game is shaping up as the Canadian version of Colts vs. Patriots. The Lions finished the season with the best record in the CFL (13-5) and have the league’s top passing offense. The Riders, though, have a scrappy defense and won three of the four meetings between these two teams this year. But that’s not the only reason to give the edge to Saskatchewan: They’re still pissed that Calgary banned the Roughriders mascot, Gainer the Gopher, from attending the their playoff game against the Stampeders last week. The Riders won that game 30-21. You do not disrespect a gopher and get away with it in Canada.

You might have missed it in all the college football hoopla today, but the Montreal Alouettes won the East Division title in the CFL. Hooray! Or maybe I should say, Le Hooray! Anyway, the Als beat the Toronto Argonauts 24-20 today, winning the division championship on a tie breaker.

Securing the home field advantage for the Eastern finals is quite a turnaround for the Alouettes, who won their first seven games of the season before losing six in a row. Legendary head coach Don Matthews resigned from the team for “health reasons” in the midst of the slump and general manager Jim Popp had to take over the team.

As for the Argos, they’ll play the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the semi-finals next week. Oh, and if you happen to be in Winnipeg on November 18, you can check out the Alouettes cheerleaders in a “colourful, sexy and energetic Montreal-style show” at the Pyramid. Ooh la la!
