“I can’t believe you stayed in there 12 rounds with me,” Jones said to Trinidad after the fight. “People thought we were old.”

Coming from a 39 year old man who just got done pummeling a 35 year old man, them’s strong words.

Fighting 10 pounds over his heaviest previous weight, Trinidad couldn’t match even Jones’ diminished skills. “I take nothing away from Roy, but if I could have avoided the knockdowns, I think I could have won the fight,” said Trinidad.

Umm, Tito, isn’t that kind of like saying: “If we hadn’t let the Patriots score 127 points in the first half and could have scored ourselves just once the entire game, I think we could have won the game?”

Ahh, you crazy, lovable punch-drunk boxers. God bless you, each and every one.

Boxing promoter extraordinaire and world famous Flowbee user Don King is close to setting up a bout between retired middleweight champion Félix Trinidad and former heavyweight champ Roy Jones Jr. According to the AP, King is calling this match “the people’s championship,” so I guess that makes him the Georges Danton of the boxing world?

Trinidad, who is 42-2 in his career, retired in 2005 after losing a bout to Winky Wright; Jones is 51-4 after losing his last fight against Antonio Tarver in 2004. There’s no firm date yet for the bout but King is reportedly trying to schedule the fight in January, so if seeing a couple guys who haven’t fought in the past couple years beat each other about the head and shoulders is your thing, then start saving your pennies now for the pay-per-view.

For those of you who have no idea who these people are or what this is all about, check out this video of Jones Jr. and this one of Trinidad.

Well, this weekend in Las Vegas, NV the biggest fight in years is going to take place. The reason it’s such a huge fight one word (well actually three words but one name) De la Hoya. He’s such a huge draw in boxing and he’s already said it may be his last fight. oh, and on top of that he gets a small $30 million dollars…

Mayweather on the other hand has also said it might be his last fight. Not exactly sure why he’s said this. Probably because he’s making a ton of $$ too. Either way this is going to be a pretty exciting fight. Or it might not be as Mayweather will probably whip the guy.

I guess the only question that remains is which pretty boy will exit from the ring? As both of these fighters are considered pretty boys.

Boxing:   Cotto TKO’ed Oktay in the 11th round.  And in Oktay’s defense his corner threw in the towel.  Although, you think they might have thrown in the towel during the fight where he broke his jaw.  Thus not leaving me with false hope.
UFC:Â The Uprising.

Personally, I think they should have called this ‘The Comeback’.  Or ‘The we use to be champs but lost’  or something to that effect.    Either way, the ex-champs ended up winning their fights.

Randy Couture wins his 5th belt!   Dominating all five rounds.

Rich Franklin wins in 2 rounds.   Setting up a rematch with Anderson Silva

Matt Hughes winning all 3 rounds.

This weekend in Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto, Rico Miguel Cotto will take on Oktay Urkal. Oktay… who? That’s what I said.

Upon doing a bit of reading Oktay Urkal is a 37 year-old seasoned veteran (really?), he’s 38-3 in the ring. Losing his only three fights in title bouts. In 2001, Oktay fought Kostya Tszyu when Kostya was in his prime. During that fight he gave Kostya more then he could handle and the fight was tied in the sixth round. However, in the seventh round Kostya broke Oktay’s jaw. Oktay didn’t quit and battled through to the end of the fight. He lost in a close unanimous decision. (Author s note: This is why I’m a lover not a fighter. When was the last time you received a broken jaw in bed? If that did happen to me in bed, I’d probably quit though.)

So this weekend he battles a heavy, hard puncher in Miguel Cotto. However, Miguel has been criticized that he may have a weak chin from a fight with Ricardo Torres in 2005. (I wonder if he quits if his jaw is broken?)

Should be an interesting fight.   The bookmakers have Cotto as a heavy favorite (1.04-1).   If you feel like gambling, the the bookmakers are giving 10-1 odds on Oktay Urkal.  Just don’t break my jaw if he loses.

Thank the gods, the Beast from the East is back in the news and ready to fight again. As an added bonus, he won’t be punching out little old men.

Nikolai Valuev has agreed to defend his WBA heavyweight title in a match against American Jameel McCline to be held in Basel, Switzerland. With the 6-6 McCline weighing in at 270 pounds and the hulking seven foot Valuev tipping the scales at 330 pounds, promoters are saying the fight could set a world record for combined weights in a title fight. Seriously, we’re talking Godzilla vs. King Kong here.

Valuev is looking to extend his 45-0 record on the way to matching Rocky Marciano’s best ever 49-0 record. McCline is looking to get back into the heavyweight picture after losing to Wladimir Klitschko in 2002. Titles, records, and unnaturally huge men bashing each other in the face: What more could you ask for?

Pay-per-view rights to this freak show have already been sold in more than 60 countries, though not yet the US.

Mike Tyson kicked off his “World Tour” last night with a bout in Youngstown, OH. Here’s how the AP set the scene:

“Wearing his familiar black shoes, blank trunks and a sleeveless white T-shirt, Tyson entered the ring at 12:23 a.m. to a rousing ovation from about 4,000 fans in the 6,000-seat Chevrolet Centre, home of the Youngstown SteelHounds, a minor league hockey team.”

You know it’s only gonna get worse after that, right? According to all reports, the former champion was huffing and puffing his way through the four-round fight against his sparring partner, Corey “T-Rex” Sanders, who was decked out in headgear. Tyson landed a couple punches, including a combination that nearly sent his opponent to the mat. Luckily the “baddest man alive,” who once espoused a desire to eat small children, wrapped up Sanders and kept him from going down.

Of course the Youngstown crowd had plenty of blood-lust in their hearts and started chanting “bullshit” and “rip-off” because they had paid $200 to see someone get knocked silly. That and they were all from Youngstown: They don’t call it the Hoboken of Ohio for nothing, you know.

There’s no word yet on if Tyson has scheduled any more stops on his “World Tour” or if he’s found any women to fight.

When asked if he was joking about fighting women, Tyson said, “I’m very serious . . . It’s all fun.”

Convicted rapist relishing the thought of fighting women? Yeah, I suppose that sounds pretty fun. About as fun as Nikolai “The Beast From The East” Valuev fighting senior citizens in a series of pay-per-view bouts.

The pee-your-pants funny part of the story, though, is the fact that Tyson is using the attention from his “World Tour” to stump for Republican candidate Michael Steele, who’s running for the Senate in Maryland. I’m sure that any political candidate would welcome an endorsement from a man who once vowed to eat another man’s children. Leave No Child Behind, indeed.
