As promised, here is the first of our however-many part series highlighting the competitors in this year’s running of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. We begin with last year’s champion Lance Mackey.
The 2007 season was a good one for Mackey as he became the first person ever to win both the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod in the same year. Both races he won with record times, completing the 1,600 kilometer Yukon Quest in just 10 days and two and a half hours; his Iditarod victory run took just nine days and five hours.
Mackey was born and raised in Alaska and comes from a long line of Iditarod champion mushers, including his dad and brother. The weird part is both of them wore bib #13 when they won, and Mackey was wearing the same number when he won last year. (Cue creepy music.)
Mackey of course raises dogs at his Come Back Kennel there in Fairbanks. You can read more about him and his dog team at the official web site.
GibbyZee is one of the newer members of the oddsnark crew. Two words never used to describe Gibson are moderation and subtle.
