A lot of Chicago Cubs fans are howling mad at new Tribune Co. owner Sam Zell for exploring the idea of selling the naming rights to historic Wrigley Field, but people have to see this from his point of view.
What kind of deadbeat company is Wrigley anyway? They haven’t paid one red cent to keep their name on that building, and Zell just wants his due.
Never mind that he has absolutely no interest in owning and operating a baseball team but he can’t seem to find anyone willing to pay enough to take it off his hands. Never mind the fact that Zell sees the baseball stadium as deadweight that he was forced to acquire along with the newspaper business. Never mind the fact that Tribune is trying to flimflam the state of Illinois into buying the landmark structure with taxpayer dollars just to get it off the balance sheet.
Never mind all that, Zell just wants what’s fair. Can’t you all understand that?
