Roy Jones Jr. won a unanimous decision last night over Felix Trinidad, in a less-than-epic battle between two boxing greats has-beens that would have been a kick-ass match-up five or six years ago.
These days? Not so much.
“I can’t believe you stayed in there 12 rounds with me,” Jones said to Trinidad after the fight. “People thought we were old.”
Coming from a 39 year old man who just got done pummeling a 35 year old man, them’s strong words.
Fighting 10 pounds over his heaviest previous weight, Trinidad couldn’t match even Jones’ diminished skills. “I take nothing away from Roy, but if I could have avoided the knockdowns, I think I could have won the fight,” said Trinidad.
Umm, Tito, isn’t that kind of like saying: “If we hadn’t let the Patriots score 127 points in the first half and could have scored ourselves just once the entire game, I think we could have won the game?”
Ahh, you crazy, lovable punch-drunk boxers. God bless you, each and every one.
