Alabama Crimson TideNCAA Football

Nick Saban Loves Him Some History Channel

For a head coach in the competitive world of college football, losing a game to a conference rival or being upset by a team from a lesser division can mean the difference between the head of the recruiting line and the bread line. I mean, winning these games are VERY IMPORTANT and losing them can spell DISASTER for a program. So for Alabama head coach Nick Saban to draw parallels between losing to Louisiana-Monroe over the weekend and the September 11 terrorist attacks is completely understandable.

In fact, I’m surprised Lloyd Carr didn’t point out the similarities between Michigan’s loss to Appalachian State and Hurricane Katrina. No wonder he decided to call it quits. USC falling to Stanford? Clearly equivalent to the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. And who couldn’t agree that Colorado’s upset over Oklahoma was in the same league as the Black Death of the 14th century?

We all need to remember that football — especially college football — is a life and death situation and losing a game, any game, is just exactly the same as any tragedy that claims thousands — if not tens of thousands — of innocent lives.

It’s just that important, people!
