Unlike the NBA’s trading deadline the NHL’s trading deadline was busy with a capital B. As usual teams are trading players who are in the last year of a contract. While teams are picking these players up usually for a draft pick, or two, or in Keith Tkachuk’s case umm, lots of draft picks.
Let’s summarize where the significant players went and what for. By significant players I mean players that we’ve all heard of. If I did every player that got traded you wouldn’t read this post as I wouldn’t type it.
Martin Biron (Buffalo Sabres) to Philadelphia Flyers for a second round pick —- Weird trade, the Sabres will make the playoffs and do well. While Philadelphia is not going to make the playoffs. Why trade a decent back-up during a playoff run for a second round pick. This trade confuses me
George Laraque (Phoenix Coyotes) and to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a prospect and a draft pick AND Gary Roberts (Florida Panthers) to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a prospect. Great trades for Pittsburgh. A) they get some grit and experience from Roberts. B) They finally have someone to protect Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. The Pittsburgh Penguins are the hottest ticket in any hockey city.
Bill Guerin (St. Louis Blues) to San Jose Sharks Ville Nieminen, prospect and first round draft picks. I don’t get why all these people are giving up so much for Tkachuk and Guerin. If they were so good why didn’t the Blues do anything good this year?
Finally, speaking of deadlines. The last minute deal was the Detroit Red Wings acquiring Todd Bertuzzi from the Florida Panthers for a prospect and a conditional draft pick. This is probably conditional on the fact he actually plays. I swear my grandma has a better back then this guy.
