NFL

How much would you pay to watch guys run around?

This weekend the NFL is holding its annual scouting combine at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Finally, some football news! But if just reading about how fast someone ran the 40-yard dash isn’t enough for you, the NFL Network is providing wall-to-wall TV coverage of the combine. Ooh, yeah! (Or is that, boo-yeah?)

Now, if you happen to have DIRECTV and are already getting the NFL Network, then bully for you. But if your local cable company doesn’t offer it (like say the evil bastard Time Warner), is the combine really the draw to get you to pay for a dish setup? I received an e-mail this week from the NFL telling me how much I needed to subscribe to their network so I can get all the combine goody-goodness, but how much would that come out to be per windsprint? Seriously, watching some fresh-out-of-college kickers punting for distance and accuracy is pretty far from my idea of a great weekend.

Come this Fall, assuming that TWC is still holding out, I’ll certainly start bitching and whining about not getting the NFL Network. But if they want to make it worth our while during the spring and summer, the NFL needs more programming other than old NFL Films shows and cheerleader tryouts. (Okay, maybe the latter is fine.) I’d suggest something akin to the sport we all love, say Australian rules football. It worked for ESPN once upon a time.
