The Beer And Pizza Series
After a long, drawn out pitchers dual, Yadier Molina hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to lift the Cardinals over the New York Mets 3-1, sending St. Louis back to the World Series for the second time in three years. It was a heck of a game, complete with what should have been a series saving catch by Mets outfielder Endy Chavez. So now the Cards will now face off against the surprising Detroit Tigers in an all Midwest series, which brings us to the question of who to root for?
St. Louis, of course, is home to the Gateway Arch and a Six Flags amusement park, but most importantly it is know for Anheuser-Busch, one of the biggest breweries in the world. The Tigers, on the other hand, are owned by the Ilitch family who also own the Little Caesars pizza chain. Beer vs. pizza? It’s like making Sophie’s choice.
On the other hand, AB breweries makes shit beer like Budweiser and Bud Lite hyped by inane ad campaigns with singing frogs and now this stupid Man Law business. (Okay, that Miller Lite. Same diff.) And you can hardly call Little Caesars pizza; it’s the worst of the big chains, and that’s saying something considering it’s up against crap like Dominos. So I guess this is less of a Sophie’s choice and more of a lesser-of-two-evils choice, though that doesn’t make it any easier.
Well, the Tigers are going to win anyway; they have genius Jim Leyland behind the bench who led an unlikely Florida Marlins team to a championship in 1997 and turned around this moribund Detroit team. With Tony La Russa, the Cardinals have a long and distinguished history of choking in the postseason and I don’t see any reason to believe that is going to change.
