Karma To Steinbrenner: You’re Not Acceptable

The Boss, George SteinbrennerSometimes it’s real easy to look around and think that there’s no justice in this great big world of ours. Politicians use our fears of terrorism to retain and expand their power, but they don’t do anything to make our country safer. Multinational conglomerates swallow up more and more of our economies, but they fail to make any one’s lives any better. Josh Hartnett has a career (sort of) and he’s sleeping with Scarlett Johansson. It’s all so wrong.

But then every once and a while the scales of justice tip in favor of the good guys. Such was the case this weekend when the mighty New York Yankees were eliminated from the postseason with 3-1 series loss to Detroit in the ALDS. I’m sure wherever they are, even the Babe, The Iron Horse, and the Yankee Clipper were having a good laugh watching the Evil Empire go down in the three straight.

Steinbrenner has invested hundreds of millions of dollars a year over the past six seasons trying to buy another World Series title, and all he has to show for it is a couple AL pennants and four early exits. (We can only hope that the fates will continue to show similar disregard for Dan Snyder’s Redskins.) The word on the street is that The Boss is hopping mad and looking to fire someone, and that someone is most likely manager Joe Torre. Some of the players on that $200 million roster might also get the boot in coming days, including Alex Rodriguez, but I certainly hope Steinbrenner doesn’t go too crazy reducing payroll: A lot of small market teams are counting on all that luxury tax money.

The ALCS, meanwhile, gets underway tonight as the Tigers travel to Oakland. Over in the NLCS, the Cardinals take on the Mets starting tomorrow. Hmm, improbable Tigers vs. Amazin’ Mets? Could make for an entertaining series, I suppose.
