Everything In Miami Is Falling Apart

Indeed, this is Philadelphia's Veterans Memorial Stadium being imploded and not Dolphins StadiumDuring the final game of the Florida Marlins on Sunday, a woman was hit in the head by a piece of concrete that broke off of the upper deck of Dolphins Stadium. She was treated by paramedics and was fine, according to all reports, but it makes one wonder, “There were people in attendance at a Marlins game?”

The fact that Miami’s top sports facility is starting to crumble comes as little surprise: It’s just the outward sign of what is happening to the two teams that call Dolphin Stadium home. The Marlins wrapped up a 78-win season this past weekend, an impressive feat for a team with a $15 million payroll, I suppose, but not impressive enough to keep rookie manager Joe Girardi around. The team fired Girardi yesterday and replaced him with Fredi Gonzalez from the Atlanta Braves. Gonzalez, of course, will be doomed to failure just like Girardi because team owner Jeffrey Loria is too preoccupied with moving the franchise to a new city.

Meanwhile, the football-playing tenant at Dolphins Stadium, picked by some learned pundits to challenge New England for dominance in the AFC East, is off to an underwhelming 1-3 start this season, including last week’s failure to beat the hapless Houston Texans. Head coach Nick Saban is only in his second year with the Dolphins, so it’s doubtful he’ll be shown the door any time soon, but some other heads on the sidelines — and in the front office — might start to roll if Miami doesn’t show signs of improvement after investing in Dante Culpepper during the off-season.
