Is It Time To Raise The White Flag?

Hold the freakin’ phone here. I can accept the USA losing in world competitions of baseball, hockey, and even basketball, but there is no damn reason the United States of All That Is Right And Holy should ever lose in a football tournament. We invented the game and outside of Canada and Germany we’re the only country that fields professional teams in this sport. Yet, that’s just what happened at the NFL Flag Football World Championship this weekend in Germany where Team USA DAC Panthers placed tenth out of ten teams. Last place? How freakin’ embarrassing. The US team went 1-3 in their group games, losing to Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain, with their only victory a 25-24 decision over Korea. Then in the consolation round, Team USA lost 52-33 to Mexico, a team that went 0-4 in their group games.

I know these are just kids out there playing some flag football, but look at ‘em wrapped up in the flag like that; there’s national pride on the line and we apparently have no pride left at this point. This is what happens when you start handing out gold stars to everyone in school. We used to be a win at all costs sort of country; now, though, we tell our kids there are no losers, and look where that has gotten us.

By the way, Thailand’s Chaopraya Wittayakom School from Bangkok won the world title with a 45-32 victory over Canada’s Ecole River Heights from Winnipeg. That makes Thailand two-time champs in the world tournament; they beat the US last year 25-19 in the final. As a nation we should all be ashamed.
