Wimbledon: One More Thing You Don’t Have To Worry About

Wimbledon: the movie staring Kirsten Dunst and Paul BettanyThe flights from London to New York will be packed with Americans returning home today now that the USA has been shut out of the Wimbledon singles quarterfinals for the first time since 1911. With Agassi, Roddick, and Venus Williams all out of the tournament, our last hope for redemption was 62nd ranked Shenay Perry, but she lost yesterday in straight sets to Elena Dementieva of Russia. To pile on our self-esteem problem, China and Finland managed to advance players into the quarters for the first time ever while the US was sent packing. Well, you didn’t need tennis interfering with your busy summer anyway, right?

For the rest of the world, and any Americans still determined to follow the happenings at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, there’s still a lot of tennis left to be played. In the men’s catagory, Rafael Nadal takes on Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen, Lleyton Hewitt goes up against Marcos Baghdatis, Radek Stepanek draws Jonas Bjorkman, and three-time Wimbledon champ Roger Federer defends his title against Mario Ancic. In the women’s bracket, Justine Henin-Hardenne plays against Severine Bremond, Amelie Mauresmo faces Anastasia Myskina, and Li Na trades volleys with Kim Clijsters. Your 2004 champion Maria Sharapova has already knocked out the aforementioned Dementieva.

But this is a holiday, right? So happy Fourth of July, America. We might suck at tennis and soccer, but no one beats us at beer drinking and blowing things up.
