The NCAA drew a line in the sand today in its get-tough campaign to clean up the image of college sports mascots. The collegiate athletics body came down hard on the University of Illinois, refusing to allow the school to host the national college tennis tournament because of the school’s mascot, Chief Illiniwek. Holy crap! Think of all the revenue Urbana and/or Champaign will lose without all the spectators streaming into town to watch the big tennis tournament. And what a blow to the school’s prestige it will be without the vaunted tennis tourney highlighting its events calandar. That’ll really show those racists in Illinois. In other NCAA action, the University of North Dakota, whose teams are nicknamed the Fighting Sioux, was stripped of the prevledge to hold this year’s national tiddlywinks competition.
