Russia 0, Czech Republic 3
After five straight wins in the round robin tournament, Russia played a tough, hard hitting game but was unable to find the net against the Czechs, who took home the bronze with a 2-0 victory. It didn’t help that their second-leading scorer, Ilya Kovalchuk (Atlanta Thrashers), was ejected after leveling Czech defenseman Pavel Kubina (Tampa Bay Lightning), but it probably didn’t matter against goal tender Tomas Vokoun (Nashville Predators), who recorded 28 saves in the shutout. Martin Erat and Marek Zidlicky (both Nashville Predators) scored early goals for the Czech team, while Martin Straka (New York Rangers) added the final insult goal against an empty net.
