Sweden 7, Czech Republic 3
I wonder what new mind games Swedish coach Bengt Ake Gustafsson has in store for the gold medal round. Earlier in the week he had everyone thinking he didn’t feel his team of Swedes were ready for tough competition, and looking at their 3-2 record in the round robin tournament who could blame him. But Sweden easily downed Switzerland 6-2 and then knocked off the Czechs with equal ease. Fredrik Modin (Tampa Bay Lightning) opened the scoring for Sweden just 30 seconds into the match, but Milan Hnilicka, a former NHL veteran who’s longest stint was with the Atlanta Thrashers, was sent to the Czech bench after giving up three goals in the first seven and a half minutes of the second period.
Finland 4, Russia 0
We call it Finland, they call it Suomi, but the way their team is playing hockey they should call it “We’ll kick your ass and dance the tango on your grave.” (For those not in the know, the tango is the national dance of Finland. Go figure.) The Fins have allowed just five goals in the entire tournament so far, and goalie Antero Niittymaki (Philadelphia Flyers) led the round robin with 131 saves. Olli Jokinen (Florida Panthers) and Teemu Selanne (Anaheim Mighty Ducks) combined for 12 goals, and Saku Koivu (Montreal Canadiens) had eight assists. Face it world, these guys are unbeatable.
