Crullers, Back Bacon, And Olympic Gold

John Candy in Canadian BaconDespite the shame and embarrassment of having their hockey team eliminated from the Olympic tournament, yesterday went pretty well for Canadian athletes in Torino. Canada took four medals in three events, bringing their total to 18, the most ever for the Canucks. In women’s 1,500 meter speed skating, it was a one-two finish for the Great White North, with Cindy Klassen taking the gold and Kristina Groves winning silver. Chandra Crawford also picked up Canada’s first gold medal in cross-country skiing, winning the women’s 1.1km sprint. And finally, the Canadian women’s short track skaters won silver in the 3,000 meter relay.

Sweden won three medals yesterday, bringing that country’s total to 10. Bjoern Lind and Thobias Fredriksson took gold and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 1.3km cross-country sprint, and Anja Paerson won a gold medal, her first ever, in women’s slalom. Austria’s Nicole Hosp and Marlies Schild took second and third place, respectively, in that event, while Sarah Schleper of the US finished tenth.

Finaly, the Swiss won three more medals to bring their total to 11 for these Winter Games. Evelyne Leu won in women’s aerials, ahead of Li Nina of China and Alisa Camplin of Australia. Team USA left some X-Games medals on the table when neither Emily Cook nor Jana Lindsey managed to qualify for the finals. In another alternative sport, snowboarding, brothers Philipp and Simon Schoch won gold and silver for Switzerland in the men’s parallel giant slalom. Apparently what helped them win was that neither tried a backside method grab just before crossing the finish line.

With the conclusion of yesterday’s events, Germany continues to lead the medal count with 22, including nine gold medals, followed by Austria with 19. Canada, Norway, and the United States are all tied for third place with 18.
