Americans On Ice, Not So Nice

Pete FensonIt was not a good day for US teams competing for medals on ice today. On the curling sheets, Pete Fenson and his crew fell out of gold medal contention as Brad Gushue and the Canadian team schooled the Americans 11-5 in nine ends. Fenson, who owns a pizza parlor in Bemidji, Minnesota, managed to bring his team back from the brink in a couple of ends, but trailing by two in the ninth Team USA took some chances and paid the price as Canada scored five to win the game. The US team will face Great Britain for the bronze on Friday, while Canada tries to win their first ever curling gold against Finland.

Later in the day, the US women’s short track relay team failed to qualify for the medal round and had to settle for a fourth place finish. The team, featuring Allison Baver, Kimberly Derrick, Caroline Hallisey, Maria Garcia, and Hyo-Jung Kim, won the Final B race ahead of France and Germany and then got bumped up from fifth to fourth place when China was disqualified in the medal race. South Korea took the gold.

And finally, America’s hopes for a medal in men’s hockey melted away as Team USA lost 4-3 to Team Suomi (that’s Finland, you’ll be hearing more about them). Of course, the tired, old NHL pros we sent to Torino only managed to win one of their five qualifying games, so chances for a medal were slim at best. Canada was also bounced from the tournament, losing to Russia 2-0, so now Wayne Gretzky and his wife, Janet Jones, are free to place bets on the remaining games.
