German Metal Rules (At The Olympics)

Germany won three more medals at the 20th Winter Olympiad yesterday to take the lead in the medal count with 21. The Germans have won the most gold medals, nine, along with seven silver and five bronze. The US and Norway are tied in second place with 18 medals each, followed by Austria with 16 and Russia with 15 medallions.

Sandra Kiriasis and Anja Schneiderheinze took the gold in women’s bobsled, topping the second place American team of Shauna Rohbock and Valerie Fleming. Gerda Weissensteiner and Jennifer Isacco placed third in the event for Italy. The German men’s biathlon relay team, featuring five-time medalist Sven Fischer, also took the gold, beating out teams from Russia and France. The American relay team placed in the top 10, which is a victory of sorts. If they replaced the cross country skiing with driving around in a pick’em up truck, I’m sure the USA could rule this event.

In the Nordic combined sprint, Austria’s Felix Gottwald took the gold ahead of Magnus Moan of Norway, while Georg Hettich won the bronze for Germany. Americans Todd Lodwick and Johnny Spillane completed the race in the top ten.

And finally, Italy’s Enrico Fabris stunned the world by winning the 1,500 meter speed skating event, topping those cat-fighting, back-biting Americans, Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick. It’s fitting that someone would rise from the pack to steal the top spot while our attention was focused on the continuing soap opera being staged by the men’s speed skating team. Congratulazioni!
