Oh Canada!

Unlike Team USA, which lost their semifinal match against Sweden, the Canadian women’s hockey team dominated the opposition and recorded a 6-0 win over Finland to advance to the gold medal round. I have to admit, I was secretly rooting for an upset that would foist an all Scandinavian medal round on NBC, which was banking on USA vs. Canada from the very beginning. I would have laughed and laughed. But, Team Canada performed as expected, limiting the Fins to 17 shots on goal in the shutout.

Here’s something I find a little odd that shows the difference between hockey pretenders (the US) and real hockey nations: the US team is made up of young gals still playing college hockey and making their Olympics debut, while Team Canada features 1998 medalist Hayley Wickenheiser, 2002 gold medalist Cheryl Pounder, and 40-year-old Danielle Goyette. Where are all the former USA team members? Cammi Granato is behind the NBC anchor desk being flirted with unabashedly by Bill Clement, while AJ Mleczko is stuck doing color commentary aside Kenny Albert. They should get those two in a uniform and out on the ice.
