Jeff King was the big winner of the delayed and shortened Kuskokwim 300 this weekend, finishing in 35 hours and 43 minutes. The start of the race was pushed back from Friday due to extreme conditions, and the course was shortened by about 45 miles. It was King’s eighth victory in the Kusko. If you’re wondering what ‘extreme’ conditions could delay the start of the mushing event, the wind chill was 60 below zero in Bethel, Alaska, and no one wanted the dogs to turn into pupcicles. If you’d like a demonstration of what that kind of extreme cold is like, check out this video. (But notice, the fellow in the video is outside without a coat.)
