Not quite a week after announcing his intention to sell the Pittsburgh Penguins, Mario Lemieux announced his retirement from hockey today. The 40-year-old Hall of Famer cited heart problems as the reason for his decision, though it makes me think his health couldn’t have been helped by watching the Pens go down in flames this season. Lemieux leaves the game as a three-time Hart Trophy winner, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, and the seventh-leading scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. As for the team he leaves behind, the Penguins have a chance to avoid an 11-game losing streak tomorrow night at home against Washington. Come on, boys, win one for Super Mario.
