Man alive, was it ever a bad idea for Andy Roddick to tempt fate with that American Express ad campaign about losing his Mojo? Promptly bumped off at last summer’s US Open shortly after the commercials debuted, Roddick was hoping for better in Melbourne.
And it seemed set up for it too. Defending champion Marat Safin, Caprisun Rafael Nadal, and Endearing Old Guy Andre Agassi all bailed on the tournament before it started due to various injuries, officially paving the way for Roddick through to the finals and a date with the Swiss Mister, Roger Federer, he of the beautiful game.
It was all for naught, though, as Roddick fell to the Bhagavad Gita in the fourth round. Andy didn’t seem actually to play too poorly. It looks like it was just a case of the Cypriot playing his best match ever. Still, Roddick’s gotta be questioning his manager talking him into sying yes to American Express.
As for other news of the first week, the rockin Martina Hingis has returned with a vengeance and is looking better than ever. God bless her. Both Williams sisters were bounced out early, as was the always charming hometown boy Leyton Hewitt.
Into the second week moves Federer, Nalbandaian, Bahgdatis, and some others. I’d imagine it’s Federer’s tournament. Again. Not complaining here. I love to watch the guy.
And on the ladies side, everyone you’d expect to be here (minus the Williamseses) seems still to be in play. I really have no prediction, but wouldn’t it be something for Hingis to keep going?
(Also, Roddick seems to be with Maria Sharapova now. So, don’t feel too bad for the guy. I mean, she can probably hook him up with a free Tag, wouldn’t ya think?)
