In the run up to this summer’s World Cup, a Dutch company has started selling plastic WWII German army helmets emblazoned with such slogans as “Attack!” and “Go, Netherlands, Go” in support of the Dutch squad. This has naturally caused a commotion within the European community, but an official with the company, Weno Geerts, explains that the novelty items are meant to be funny. “It’s just a joke,” he says. “We’re making fun of Germans, just like they like to make fun of us.” But why stop at orange, plastic helmets? How about jackets bearing a picture of Auschwitz and Belzec with the logo, “Property of German National Soccer Training Camp.” Or maybe shirts that say, “German Soccer. It’s A Gas!” Come on, people, it’s all in good fun, right?
