Jersey Is No Place For A Guy Named Herman

Herman EdwardsHerm Edwards has at last been saved from the Pine Barrens and all those hard hat wearing Long Islanders for a new life in fly-over country as the new head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Edwards survived five mostly miserable seasons at the Meadowlands with the J-E-T-S: he compiled a 39-41 record and took the team to the playoffs three times, but when things went wrong they went disastrously wrong. He came within a field goal of reaching the AFC Championships last year but his final season was hampered by injuries to Chad Pennington (again) and Curtis Martin, as well as the (overdue) curtain call for Wayne Chrebet. Bully for you, Herm.

The boosters at Arrowhead are probably pretty happy to get an experienced head coach from the Big City rather than an untested assistant or someone from the college ranks, but the Chiefs history doesn’t bode well for success under Edwards. Their last head coach, Dick Vermeil, came in with Super Bowl credentials and he failed to get the team deep into the playoffs, and before that Marty Schottenheimer claimed just three division titles in 10 years. But Edwards looks so damn happy, we won’t spoil it for him.
