With Friday night’s victory over the Wizards the New York Knickerbockers have won consecutive games for just the second time this season.
Isiah Thomas’ drafting acumen continues to pay off as rookie Channing Frye scored 30 to lead the way and also had 7 boards and even 2 steals. Fellow rookie David Lee impressed once again, leading the team on the glass with 8 rebounds. Yet another rookie, 5′9″ shooting guard Nate Robinson, contributed 16 points of his own. Second year forward and 2004 Knick draftee Trevor Ariza also had 8 points. That Isiah is one slick drafting fool. (Combined salaries = $4.762 million)
Unfortunately, Isiah Thomas’s trading and free agent-signing skills lack the same efficient panache. The Cablevision folks who own the Knicks are paying Penny Hardaway and Allan Houston $34.875 million not to be on the roster. They’re paying Antonio Davis $13.86 million to average 20 minutes, 5 points, and 5 rebounds a game. They’re paying Malik Rose and Jerome James a combined 11 million big ones to rack up DNP-CDs one after the other. And then, finally, they’re paying Stephon Marbury, Jamal Crawford, Maurice Taylor, Quentin Richardson, and Eddy Curry a collective of $46,281 million to be their big time guys — and we’ll let you draw your own conclusions as to the wisdom of that even without the salaries to consider. (Don’t forget, Jerome Williams is getting another $6 million for wearing his socks up around his knees.)
All in all, the exhausting total is $124, 125, 013. Anyone care to tell Thomas he can run the drafts for now on but someone else gets to make the signing and trading decisions?
