Islanders 3, Sabres 6
In the penalty box: strategic decision by the Isles to stand on three first period points
Canadiens 0, Thrashers 4
In the penalty box: being a holiday guest, as in Montreal has lost nine straight road games.
Flyers 3, Panthers 2, SO
In the penalty box: Florida center Nathan Horton, for astutely observing, “We could have played a bit better.”
Blackhawks 3, Blue Jackets 4, OT

In the penalty box: fashion victims. Ottawa is 5-0 when wearing their alternate home jerseys.
Hurricanes 4, Lightning 5, OT
In the penalty box: Carolina goalie Martin Gerber, for his post-game assessment, “We lost a point here tonight.”
Stars 6, Blues 1
In the penalty box: St. Louis defenseman Dennis Wideman, for commenting, “You’d like to see us test the goalie a little more than that.” I think, Dennis, the fans would like to see your team actually score more than that.
Coyotes 4, Avalanche 7
In the penalty box: third period meltdowns, as in Phoenix gave up four goals in the final 20 minutes after taking a 4-3 lead.
Wild 4, Oilers 1
In the penalty box: post-holiday blahs. Edmonton had built a five-game winning streak before the Christmas break.
Flames 2, Canucks 1

Sharks 3, Kings 4
In the penalty box: limited warranties. San Jose has lost four of five after building a six-game winning streak in the wake of the Joe Thornton trade.

Christmas might be over, but let’s see if there are a few more gifts in the ol’ stocking.
Detroit is back in action after a four-day break, and the extra rest will probably serve them well tonight against Dallas. The Red Wings have not lost to the Stars in eight games going back to 2002 and had a three-game winning streak going before the holiday. They will probably face backup goalie Johan Hedberg, who has only played in six games, although the situation isn’t much better for Dallas if starter Marty Turco returns from the flu: he hasn’t beaten Detroit ever in his career. Best line: Detroit +115 at Nine.com.
Nashville is looking to keep its happy holidays going by extending its pre-Christmas win streak to six games. The problem is, though, they travel to Calgary where the Flames have just beaten Vancouver twice to extend their home record to 12-3-2. The Flames are also looking for a little revenge against the Preds, who beat them in Nashville 2-0 earlier this season. Best line: Calgary -140 at BetCRIS.
