Meet The Mushers: DeeDee Jonrowe

When I think of the rugged musher type braving the harsh elements, I don’t think of anyone named DeeDee. Yet, she’s one of the top female mushers in the world. DeeDee took up the sport in 1979 and entered her first Iditarod Trail Race the following year. During the 1990s she was a regular top 10 finisher, placing 2nd three times in 1993, 96, and 98. DeeDee returned to form last year, finishing in 10th place. In addition to the Iditarod, she takes part in such events as the Copper Basin 300 and the Kobuk 440. As if all that wasn’t enough, DeeDee is a breast cancer survivor and inspirational speaker. Her Web site has lots of photos of her and her dogs.
