Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Florida is going to erect a “near lifesize” statue of New Jersey Net Vince Carter in front of a new gymnasium to be built with funds donated by Carter. The statue is a gift of Carter’s Mom.
Some school board members have complained that erecting the statue sends the wrong message. “There have been many students graduated from that school who have made wonderful contributions to their fellow man - in science, health, theater. Where are their statues?” board member Judy Conte asked. “I think we’re saying we value you if you can make a lot of money, and that troubles me.”
Conte seems to be missing the point. The school board isn’t saying you have value only if you have money. The school board is saying you have value only if you’re famous. So if that flamboyant Timmy Turner does indeed make the big leap from community theatre to the Great White Way like he keeps talking about. He and his mom can come home to Volusia County, donate a shit load of money for a new cafetorium, and then erect a statue of himself in front of it.
Besides, doesn’t Conte know that Vince Carter cares about education and wants to present a good image to the kids? In fact he cares so much about the importance of education that he made his former team lose that Game 7 all those years ago because he wanted to walk in his college graduation. Sheesh.

A wizard of blogging and sports the likes of which you've never seen. Or, you know, some dude talking out is butt about sports.
