Yeah, yeah, so they said all the obligatory stuff you’d expect, as far as “gut-wrenching decision”, “special player”, “Hall of Famer”, yada yada yada, but the Astros finally grew a pair and potentially cut the Rocket loose by denying him salary arbitration, weary of dealing with his tired schtick again come negotiation time.
Yes, Roger, you’re a damn good pitcher. You’re turning in incredible seasons at an age most pitchers are long retired. You carried the Astros on your back for much of last season and are probably the reason they finally made it to the World Series.
But good lord, the Maybe-I’ll-play-gee-I-dunno-maybe-I’ll-retire-hmm-Randy-what-do-you-think-me-I-just-don’t-know-i’m-just-a-good-ol-boy-who-loves-playing-ball routine is way, way played out. You made $18 million dollars last year. That’s $562,500 per start, for the 32 times you lumbered out to the mound.
Can’t you and your agent Randy Hendricks find some way to, you know, be happy with that? Over half a million bucks per start? That’s not enough? You’ve got to drag negotiations out for forever, trying to force teams over a barrel so you can squeeze a bit more cashola out of them?
Kudos, ‘Stros.
