Bosox to Renteria: Eddie, We Love You, Here’s $40 Million. Oh Wait, We Hate You, You’re Traded

The Edgar Renteria era didn’t last long in Boston, with trading him to the Braves for Andy Marte just one year after lavishing a 4 year, $40 million contract on Renteria.

Granted, he didn’t exactly light it up in Beantown last year, leading the majors with 30 errors while only putting up a .276 average, eight homers, and 70 RBIs.

But the Braves don’t seemed bothered by, you know, numbers and what-not, as John Schuerholz believes “…when he gets back to the National League in Atlanta he will return to the Renteria of old.”

Umm, okay. Because of the water, Johnny? It’s the National League water, isn’t it? It’s got to be the water.

To be fair to the Bravos, Boston will pay $8 million of the $26 million Renteria is owed for the next three seasons, as well as a $3 million buyout if Renteria’s $11 million option for 2009 is declined.
