The Toronto Blue Jays responded to criticism that the team doesn’t have enough players who go by their initials by signing Marlins pitcher A.J. Burnett to a five-year, $55 million contract. The announcement comes days after the Jays signed B.J. Ryan to a five-year, $47 million deal.
General manager J.P. Ricciardi said at the winter meetings in Dallas, “One thing about initials is if you’re going to have one, you can’t just use the middle one. Either you’re going to be a player that goes by his initials or you’re not.”
The Jays are said to be exploring deals with catchers JD Closser, A.J. Hinch, and A.J. Pierzynski, first basemen D.T. Cromer and J.T. Snow, second baseman P.J. Forbes, short stops J.J. Furmaniak and B.J. Upton, and outfielders J.J. Davis and B.J. Surhoff. Ricciardi is also scouting pitchers D.J. Carrasco, J.D. Durbin, D.J. Houlton, T.J. Mathews, C.J. Nitkowski, J.J. Putz, J.C. Romero, C.C. Sabathia, J.D. Smart, and J.J. Trujillo.
