Meet The Mushers: Doug Swingley

Okay, earlier I proclaimed Jeff King to be a living, breathing God, and make no bones about it he is good. But Doug, sorry, Mr. Swingley, is a legend who transcends the sport. Mr. Swingley is a four-time Iditarod champion, having won the race in 1995 and then three straight years begining in 1999. (Hear that, King, three in a row!) Mr. Swingley “retired” after the 2002 race to get married to fellow musher Melanie Shirilla but was back in 2004. He scratched, though, having made it as far as Takotna. Last year Mr. Swingley finished in 14th place. On his Web site, you can buy dogs raised by the master.
