I don’t know whether it’s because he’s seen what Navratilova has been able to do the past year or two or because he truly wants to boost the profile of doubles play or because years of various powders and a marriage to Tatum O’Neal coupled with a borderline personality disorder finally just tripped the wire. But John McEnroe says he’s gonna play in a regulation ATP tournament, February’s SAP Open in San Jose.
McEnroe, who will team with Jonas Bjorkman, will turn 47 on the fourth day of the tournament. He last played a regulation ATP tour event in 1992 when Andy Roddick was 10, Rafael Nadal was 6, and Donald Young was 3. McEnroe and his ego said, “Jonas and I are not doing this just for fun. We think that this will be great for the game of tennis. We’ll see what happens when I get out there and what the future is going to hold for doubles.”
