Pretty Boy vs. Little Big Man — sounds like an A&F model in a slap fight with a five-year-old. Floyd Mayweather Jr. (34-0) is taking on Sharmba Mitchell (56-4) Saturday night in the Mecca of boxing, Rose Garden, Portland.
Mayweather’s an HBO fighter, so you know where to watch. Fight fans and sportsbooks seem to agree that HBO shows better fights on Rome (Titus Pullo’s something like 103-0), but I’m not so sure Sharmba’s going out like that. Take out a couple of losses to Kostya Tszyu, and he hasn’t been beaten since back-to-back losses to Stevie Johnston and Leavander Johnson (R.I.P.) in ‘94.
He couldn’t beat Tszyu at 140, but he’s fighting Floyd Jr. at 147. (Does it make any difference? Hell, I don’t know, people — I’m trying to get excited about some goddamn boxing here. If nothing else, give him credit for bouncing back from the shame of twice losing to someone nicknamed Thunder From Down Under.)
As for Mayweather, well, he’s quite possibly the best pound-for-pound fighter in the game. I say possibly, because he hasn’t had a decent fight since Chop Chop Corley in mid-2004 (sorry, New Jersey, but Arturo Gatti should hang up the gloves and start his next chapter).
So yeah, we’re all pissed that Mayweather’s not fighting Winky Wright or Zab Judah, but he is getting in the ring with a good fighter. Good enough to shock the world? Maybe. Would I put my money where my mouth is? Well sure, but keep in mind I’m a sports blogger, living the crazy playboy sports blogger lifestyle. If I need play money I just go dig under the seats of my Hummer or pull a diamond off my tooth.
Not much action out there, but for the players, BetCRIS has Sharmba +700.
