Masters Cup Officials to Agassi: Hey, We’re Trying to Sell Some Tickets Here?!?

Apparently, the organizers of the Masters Cup in Shanghai have had enough with those weak ass tennis players and their excuses. Three of the qualifying eight (Roddick, Hewitt, and Safin) begged off even before the thing started, and No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 5 Andre Agassi pulled out of the tournament after it commenced.

Agassi lost his first match to Nikolay Davydenko and then withdrew from the tournament complaining of a sprained ankle. This came about an hour after Nadal had given his notice. Tounament officials seemed to be implying that Andre was a big puss, referring back to the 2002 Masters Cup when Agassi withdrew after two matches. “After two defeats, he cited his injury again, a hip injury, and he took off again. This year, by the same token, it happened,” an interpreter said that deputy director Wang Liqun said, more or less.

Seems to me that you should tread lightly with the coward talk around Agassi these days. Andre’s a warrior — at least in so much as one can be a warrior in a game that’s best played in white slacks and a V-neck sweater — and deserves better.

Incidentally, should you be so inclined, Bodog’s offering Davydenko at -200 against Gaston Gaudio and Agassi replacement Fernando Gonzalez at -390 against Nadal replacement Mariano Puerta.
